These super cute Fabric Alphabet Letters are such a fun craft idea. And also a great simple sewing project idea for beginner sewers. Plus I love handmade gifts and they can make a great gift as well! I’m super excited to have one handmade gift checked off my list – these super cute Fabric Alphabet Letters!
I have a tutorial for these simple Fabric Alphabet Letters to show you how to make them. My nephew is just a few months old, the age where they don’t “need” anything, so I thought these letters would be fun and enjoyed for years to come. His preschool sister I’m sure will love to sort letters, spell simple words, etc. This post may contain affiliate links.

These are so cute! And so simple! My two year old would love them, thanks for the inspiration!

These are great! I imagine I could make them with flannel as well if I wanted my son to be able to stick them on his flannel board. I have to be honest..I’m just dreading the cutting out of the cardboard templates!!
Mandy Beyeler says
flannel is a great idea!! I just cut my templates of out paper, so that’s a little easier – good luck with it!
Kimberly says
Any tips on how to cut out those tiny center holes?
Mandy Beyeler says
Just go slow – I folded the center part in half and cut on that fold to start a slit, and then slid my scissors into the slit, if that helps!
Susan the Farm Quilter says
I made a couple of sets of these a year ago by choosing a font from my computer and printing it out. I also cut the letters out using pinking shears to avoid the stringing mess.
JulieCC says
I agree – pinking shears are a much better option!
Patricia Cash says
Thank you,, I know two little girls that would love these.
JulieCC says
I have also made these with double-sided, fusible Peltex so they are stiffer.
You also want to add additional copies of some letters, especially vowels and frequently used ones. That way words with two letters can be spelled out. For instance, my daughter, and many of my great nieces, would not be able to spell their names with only 26 letters. 🙂
Mandy Beyeler says
that’s a great idea!!!
Theresa says
I made two alphabets – one complete, and one without an additional J,K,Q,X or Z. Then I also made a third copy of the E,O and S, before I ran out of fabric squares 🙂
Jan Sheldon says
Could I ask where you got the charm pack – Toy Chest? I love the colors that you used. Thank you for the information.
Mandy Beyeler says
it’s from Riley Blake, so any fabric store that carries Riley Blake lines – hope that helps!
Pamela Pennington says
I love these and can’t wait to sew these for my granddaughter. Question….Did you straight stitch alone or zig zag? They are adorable.
Mandy Beyeler says
I just sewed straight because I wanted them to fray a little – I’m sure either way will work!
Theresa says
I’ve been trying in vain to open and use your fabric alphabet letters. Every time I use the link, download the file and then try to open it, I get a folder with nothing in it. It literally shows up as ‘zero kb’ Please help!
Mandy Beyeler says
I just checked on it, and apparently they were deleted out of the online file – but I just added them back in, so hopefully you’ll be able to access them now – sorry about the trouble! thanks!
Theresa says
Ah thank you Mandy! I am making the letters but the font really isn’t as good as your one, so I might have to do a second set!
Theresa says
I posted a comment two days ago which was ‘waiting moderation’, and now it has disappeared. It wasn’t in the least contentious, I was simply asking for help with downloading the alphabet pattern. I love this idea and really wanted to make the letters for my granddaughter. However, I have now managed to find a suitable font and print out my own alphabet, so I no longer need the help.
Mandy Beyeler says
Sorry I wasn’t able to help sooner! Glad you were able to find a font that works! Looks like the files somehow got deleted from the online folder, but I added them back in, so hopefully you’ll be able to access them in the future. Thanks!

Debbie says
Great idea. I’m going to make two sets for some little girls I know. The vowels are going to be solid colors.
Theresa says
I’ve been making some more of these, but have done them slightly differently. Instead of drawing round the templates onto the fabric (which I found difficult with some fabrics, despite having every colour and type of fabric marker imaginable!!), I traced them onto greaseproof paper, then pinned that on top of the ‘sandwich’. I then sewed around the letter, tore off the paper and cut out with pinking shears. Thought this might be helpful to anyone else having trouble transferring the shape to the fabric. I’ve now made two sets – they are absolutely wonderful! Thanks for the inspiration xx
Mandy Beyeler says
great idea!!! thanks for sharing!
Erika Haines says
These are sooo cute and such a great idea! Can’t wait to find a font I like and create my own personal set for any little ones that show up!! 🙂

I had seen a tutorial for stuffed felt letters and was going to make them for my grandson, but then I realized it involved hand stitching the edges. I have severe arthritis, and I would have been unable to hand stitch the edges. I googled machine stitched alphabet letters, and you tutorial is the easiest to sew. I like the your suggestion of making the backs of the letters of a solid fabric so as not to confuse the kids. I also like the low-loft batting. Thinner letters are easier for small hands to pick up. Now all I need to do is google “How many of each of the letters of the alphabet do I need to sew in order for a child to spell several different words at one time?” Thank you so much for your tutorial which I will be able to sew much more easily than other tutorials I read.
Mandy Beyeler says
Your grandson will love them!!
Gloria says
These are so cute and I can’t wait to sew them up for my grandson. I was just wondering why you suggested that the batting and the backing squares be larger than the alphabet square? I’m sure it’s an obvious reason but I can’t figure out why. Thanks!
Mandy Beyeler says
Just in case you don’t have them lined up exactly, that way you’ll have a little extra hang over – but you don’t have to do it that way, matching up will work too!
Caitin says
What a fun project! I made my baby niece a quilt and have tons of left over scraps from it. I’ve been looking for something special to make her with the scraps, and this will be the perfect project! Thanks for sharing the letter downloads!
Camilla F. Kristensen says
Thank you so much for this idea. These letters are perfect for an extra christmas present for my twins. A boy and girl, 2 and half years old. I want to use your chunky letters, but I was just wondering; What font have you used, and what skale? Have you “drawn” them yourselves? I ask this, because we’re Danish, and we have a few more letters in our alphabet, than you: Æ Ø, Å. I want them to match the other letters perfectly.
Thanks again. I can’t wait to get started.
Mandy Beyeler says
so sorry, I can’t remember which font I used!
Debi says
Making these for my grandsons.
Do you have a template for the matching numbers?
I’m not sure how to begin to find the font you used for the alphabet
Mandy Beyeler says
sorry, I don’t have the numbers, and I can’t remember what font to look for, sorry!
Chelsea says
I sewed these as a Christmas gift but I used a tight zigzag stitch. It is definitely a time consuming project – took me over 6 hours to do it all. I’m thinking it was the zigzag stitch that added a lot of extra time. Such a lovely project, though, and I love the finished project! I’ll be making more for when my little girl gets older 🙂
Susan says
In the fabric letter instructions, at first you say to sew along the traced line, then further down you say to sew 1/4” inside the traced line to leave some seam allowance for ragging. Just wondering which is correct, or do both options work? I don’t want the letters to go wonky if I choose the wrong option 🙂
Anne Mark says
Thank you for this tutorial! Just finished making a double set for my granddaughter. Her name is Annabelle- needed to double the letters. The font was easy to use for this project, I really appreciate you giving it to us for free. I’m going to make a fabric basket for them to be stored in.
Mandy Beyeler says
yea! I bet it turned out super cute!
