I’m making a super-simple, super easy 10 minute T-Shirt Skirt for this time of the year again, Skirting the Issue!! This year . All you need are a couple of discarded tees and 10 minutes and you’ll have a new skirt in no time.
This is a great project for a beginner sewer, or any sewer who is looking for a quick and easy project. The 10 minute T-Shirt Skirt is perfect for everyone to tackle!
10 minute T-Shirt Skirt
You’ll need:
–a couple of discarded tees – the bigger you need the skirt, the bigger the tees need to be. My daughter wears a girls 10/12 and I was able to make her skirt from 2 women’s size small tees.
–basic sewing tools
First up, lay out your tee and cut out a rectangle. Mine was slightly wider at the bottom than at the top. The bottom of the skirt will be the bottom of the tee, since it already has a finished hemmed edge.
I cut the contrasting tee into two 6 inch strips, one for the waistband and one for a headband.
On to sewing! Put the two skirt pieces with right-sides together and sew up each side seam.
Now, for the waistband, you’ll want it slightly smaller than the width of the skirt. Mine was about the right size so I didn’t need to cut the side seams and sew it smaller, but if yours is bigger than your skirt you’ll want to make it smaller. So you have a 6 inch tall tube of fabric. Fold that in half so that you have a 3 inch tall tube of fabric with a fold on the top and raw edges matching up on the bottom. Iron the fold into place. In the picture below, the top sample is before folding and the bottom sample is after ironing.
To attach the waistband, first turn your skirt right-side out. Slide the waistband over the top of the skirt with the raw edges up and folded edge down. Match up the raw edge of the top of the skirt with the raw edge of the waistband, as show in the picture below:
That’s all there is to it!! Seriously!! If you’re quick, you might even be able to get it done in five minutes instead of ten. For the headband, she’s just wearing it with raw edges, so that made it super easy.
To Recap:
How to make a T-Shirt Skirt
- use two discarded tshirts
- cut rectangle shape for skirt, cut 6 inches from contrasting shirt for waistband
- with right-sides together, sew sides of skirt
- fold waistband in half top-to-bottom, matching raw edges
- turn skirt right-side out, slide waistband over the top, match raw edges, and sew in place
That’s it! Wear and Enjoy! If you love skirts and simple sewing, you might also want to check out these past projects:

So cute! But I dont get how to fit it since it has no elastic in the waistband???
Mandy Beyeler says
the waist band is slightly smaller than the top of the skirt, so the knit stretches even not to need elastic. Kind of like yoga pants have their waistband
