I love Instagram! I love the little snippets into life I can share and all that it captures. So when I saw an Instagram Block Ornament, I knew I needed to make one ASAP!
I saw the idea on Bits of Everything – hers is super cute. You can hop over there for more detailed tutorial instructions.
But I knew I couldn’t narrow the entire year of 2014 into just 4-5 pictures – I had too many fun family moments I wanted to include…. the olympics, grandma day camp, color run, snow days, summer of shakes, house building – it’s been a busy year!
So I thought I’d make a string of blocks – I ended up with 4 blocks (and still had to cut down on my picture usage!) and I just love it!
A basic overview of instructions:
–the blocks were 1 1/2 inch.
–I edited pictures on my computer to fit that size
–I used a decoupage mix made of 3 parts Elmer’s Glue to 1 part water. I painted that on the block, stuck the picture on, then painted over the picture with the glue medium.
–I put pictures on all sides of the block – even on the top and bottom, because why not!
–I used eye hooks in the blocks and then jump rings to hook the eye hooks together.
–I used a marker to write “2014” on the bottom block.
That’s it! I try to do a DIY ornament each year, and I’m just loving this one!!
It has a little bit of twist and spin to it, which I love, seeing the pictures as they rotate around. So so fun!!

Where did you purchase the blocks? Are they wood? Any one store that carries? I want to do this for a 4th grade class and have them build/put together for gifts for their parents. Do you think they can handle?
Thanks. Happy Holidays!

I got the blocks at Michaels – not the package, but individual blocks. I can’t remember how much each block was, but it might add up for a whole class – maybe just one block for each kiddo? I think they could handle pasting the pictures on – they’d enjoy it!

I bought my wood blocks at Hobby Lobby. You can get a package of 6 blocks for $3.99.
