If you’ve been following along on the blog, you’ll know that over the years I’ve been practicing my crochet skills. All those first-time hurdles – reading an actual pattern (instead of winging it), making a little animal (instead of just something flat), etc etc. Well today I’m super excited for a couple more firsts – – my first pillow, and my first pattern – wahoo!!
I am pretty excited that it actually turned out – picturing it in my head is one thing, but seeing it actually take shape was pretty exciting.
I was given the yarn for the project from Red Heart Yarn and a Crochet Hook set from Boye – and you can win some for yourself!! More info on that on down…. but first let me tell you how to make this super cool pillow:
It is made out of yarn yo-yos. Those are the circle things. So basically you make as many as you want, depending on the size of pillow, then you whip stitch them together.
For the yo-yo, I wanted the circles big and substantial, so I used a Quadruple Crochet stitch. Yes, that’s a thing. It’s very similar to the common Double Crochet – with the double crochet, you yarn over once to start your stitch. With the Quadruple Crochet, you yarn over 3 times to start your stitch.
The general yo-you pattern:
Make a magic ring (this is so you can pull the center tight to close it). Chain 5. 24 Quadruple Crochets into the magic ring. Slip stitch back in the first quadruple crochet to join the circle. Pull magic ring tight. Repeat a bazillion times, for as many yo-yos as you want.
Now, I’m not a crochet pro, so if you are you might know of a better way to join the yo-yos, but I’ll tell you how I did it. First lay out your yo-yos to a pattern (or non-pattern) of your choosing:
Then flip them all over so the back is facing up. Then whip-stitch in those back stitches where the circles touch one another:
You can see the connecting yarn a little on the front side, but not too much:
I think it’d be super cool to have a crocheted front and back, and slip it over a pillow form. But I ran out of time so my pillow is only crocheted on the front. I didn’t have a pillow form the size I wanted, so I first sewed the crocheted panel to a white piece of fabric (so stuffing wouldn’t go through the holes in the yarn)
I sewed down the middle of the ones on the edge, to square up the pillow:
Then with right sides together, I simply sewed that front panel to a back panel of the same size. I left an opening in which I was able to turn the pillow right-side out and stuff in pillow batting. Then I hand-sewed that opening shut.
You can see how the back and front meet up:
That’s all there is to it!! Enjoy your creation!!
