Summer Pocket Shirt

My daughter was wearing a long-sleeve shirt the other day – but it has gotten really warm here.  I asked her if she wanted to wear a summer shirt and she said that “this one has a POCKET”.  Oh, THE pocket.  She does love pockets – whoe doesn’t!  So I thought, I should just whip her up a summer shirt with a pocket.  This was an easy project – I got it done with plenty of naptime to spare.  Here’s a quick “how to sew a shirt with a pocket”
First gather your stuff.   I had a tank top for the main shirt, a too-small shirt for cutting up (why oh why can I not get fuschia to photo well?!), and the long-sleeved shirt with a pocket that I used as a pattern.  But really you could eyeball the pocket if you don’t have anything to use for the pattern.
Next cut trace the pocket onto a piece of paper, lay the paper over your sacrifice shirt and cut out the pocket.  The reason I used a shirt instead of some cute designer fabric was because I wanted the stretch factor that knit brings with it.  Then turn under all the edges and stitch into place (I didn’t turn under the bottom edge because the shirt I was using had a scalloped ruffle to it which I wanted to keep).
If you want to embellish the pocket any, now’s the time.  Then pin the pocket in the right spot and stitch it to the shirt – try not to pull the fabric as it sews (the hassle of working with knit).  Also don’t sew the curve part where the hands go in – or the hands won’t go in.
I felt like the shirt needed a little something more.  I cut the trim off of the sleeves on the sacrifice shirt – they were almost a perfect match to the new shirt.
I just slid the trim under the edge of the new shirt and sewed it in place.  You could pin this if you’re nervous about freehanding it.
And that’s it!  Summer Pocket Shirt done.  You should have seen her face when I told her I made a shirt with a pocket for summer – at that moment I knew I was cool.  A friend was over who said “Man-dyyy, can you make ME one of those?!”
