I’ve been crafting with leather, a first for me, and I’m hooked! It’s so cool – it comes in so many colors and the possibilities are endless. I love that you don’t have to finish the edges on the projects. It steps up the awesome on whatever the project may be. I started small so the first thing I tackled was Metallic Leather Bows, and I’ve got a tutorial to walk you through it.
I know, I know, shocker that I’m making more bows… I’m addicted to these! So simple and so cute, my kind of project. It was fun to find a different medium than felt to use, and now leather may be my go-to…
Let’s jump right in – – You’ll need:
–Bow Template (you can find FREE templates and patterns HERE, and more detailed tutorial instructions on bows here, including a video!)
–metallic leather (I was sent mine from Leather Hide Store, but this post isn’t compensated)
–Scissors and Hot Glue
First trace the pattern onto your leather – just a plain ole pen works really well:
Then using sharp scissors, cut it out, taking care to cut slightly inside the lines so that no pen will remain on your bow:
Also, a little different from felt construction versus leather since leather has a front and a back – you’ll need to cut off the wrap stem, like so:
Now, with the round piece, take each end and secure it to the back center using hot glue. This creates the bow loops.
Then you just take that whole piece and glue to to the top of the tails. Then wrap around the wrap piece and secure it with glue in the back. You can see video of the putting together of the bow HERE. I glued bobby pins on the back of these ones just because I didn’t have clips on hand, but I prefer clips.
I can’t get over how awesome this leather is – I love the metallic shimmer when it catches the light (which is really hard to capture in pictures!). I would describe it as a pewter color leather, and it’s just perfect.
The soft brown is great as well, and has a pearl gold shimmer to it when it catches the light. I think both of these leathers are perfect for the holidays – fun and a little sparkle and shine without being over the top.
Super cute as piggy tail decor:
And I totally think adults can pull off the mini bow as well – under a bun, holding back bangs, etc… here’s a bad-light bathroom pic to show that (and my new super-dark hair – I’m just going to roll with it!)
What would you make with awesome leather scraps (check out The Leather Hide Store to see all that they have) – I think one of those magic braid things would be super fun, made into a keychain handle. Or a clutch with leather details. A fun bow bracelet. Possibilities are endless!
