I love red white blue decor all summer long – can’t get enough. This past weekend I enlisted the kiddos to help with some decor. We made our own Patriotic Stars – yep, even molded the plastic!
It was a fun project and after we molded the stars, the kids were able to decorate them and we assembled a garland. It’s fun to see each of their personalities.

To mold the stars, I used Friendly Plastic, which you can find at Michael’s (I was provided product for this project). It’s little plastic beads that makes it easy to make and form your own shapes. All you have to do is heat the product to turn it into a soft, easy to use material that can be colored and even reused again and again.
Per package directions, I used our electric skillet, with water, set on simmer. Then you simply scoop in the Friendly Plastic.
Then as it warms up, it will turn clear – that’s how you know it’s ready. Use a craft stick to glob it all together and pull it out of the water.
You can mold and form it from there. I used a cookie cutter to help define my shape because I knew I couldn’t freehand a star.
While it was still warm and moldable I removed it from the form and reworked the edges a little.
As it cools it hardens into the shape you formed, in this case our stars.
You can use craft paint to decorate the plastic. We used Painters paint markers. They worked great.
The kids had a fun time decorating and figuring out the final look of their star creation.
And that’s all there is to it!!
Friendly Plastic is a fun product perfect for making art projects, jewelry and even masks – it makes molding varieties of shapes and plastic creations super easy! What would you make with it??Friendly Plastic is available online at Michaels.com – check it out!
