Do you know about Word Clouds?? They are bunchs of words, with endless possibilities. The more that you have a word listed, the bigger it is in the cloud. And I think there are tons of crafty ideas for them…
I’m been digging them forever – I searched my family blog and found this one from early 2009:
My then-Kindergartener came home on the last day of school with a framed Star Word Cloud from her teacher, showing all of her traits and characteristics (the star shown above). What a thoughtful gift!
And I’m slow to blog about the idea – it’s still a great idea for the end of the school year, listing things the child learned and experienced that year, etc.
ANOTHER idea I had though, was more Back-to-School focused. A couple of my kiddos need 3 ring binders this year and they come with the clear sleeve on the front. I think a word cloud would be a fun thing to use to cover their notebook.
How to make a word cloud:
So – there’s a couple of ways to make a word cloud – you can type in words (the more times that you type a word, the bigger it will appear in your cloud), or you can have them pull words from a source – like say, this blog. Here’s one I pulled from my RSS and dumped into the “twitter” shape – fun, right? As an example of how it works, the word “love” is pretty big, that means it shows up a lot on my site.
Sites I’ve used:
In the past (you know, back in 2009) I’ve used the site Wordle to create word clouds. But when the teacher sent home the star one, I looked for a site that could do word cloud shapes and found Tagxedo – and it’s the one I used for the shape above. Wordle is more simple to use, but Tagxedo give you lots more options. Both are pretty fun – you might have to download some software (like Java) to get started, but then you’re good to go.
The possibilities on uses are endless – cover those notebooks, make some wall decor, frame one for a teacher gift – I might try to make one to use as a wallpaper for my phone.
What would you do with a word cloud?

I made these as gifts for my family. Birthdays and Weddings. Here’s a link to the post I did about it to make a small 8×10 wall art. 🙂

I have always loved word clouds myself, though I haven’t done anything with them. I only knew about Wordle, so I’m excited to check out the other site you mentioned!

I love this idea! I wonder if I can import it into my Silhouette Cameo software and print it out on vinyl – that would be awesome!

But then again, it would be an awful lot of weeding!
