This summer I held a Kids Craft Camp each week – it was so so fun!! One week we tackled String Art and they came out so so cute – so I wanted to share the String Art Heart Kids Craft idea with you! I think we had about a dozen girls there ranging in ages 6-12yrs.
And I’ve got a few tips and tricks for you as to what worked best for us – –
I’ve made a heart string art in the past, but it was a “sunburst” pattern instead of just filling in the heart, and it had lots of color changes – it’s super cool (and you can find the details of the tutorial here: Heart String Art), but I knew it would need to be simplified for a kids craft project.
String Art Heart Kids Craft, Tips and Tricks
SIZE – – Instead of a giant board, I made sure to use a small board. I bought 1×6 boards and cut them into 6 inch squares.
PAINT – – I pre-painted all of the boards white, so they had a white background to start with, and then we made sure to start the painting right when everyone arrived. I had tons of colors out to choose from, foam brushes, and washi tape for taping off sections if they wanted. The girls painted their boards and then we went on a nature walk and had a snack while the paint dried.
TEMPLATE – – I had preprinted hearts onto paper the size of the boards. A couple of girls wanted to do a “custom” shape, which was fine, but they had to freehand it on the back of their heart paper. Then I had them put dots along their outline where they wanted to place nails.
HAMMERING – – I sent them outside to hammer in the nails! They need a nice hard surface, so the cement porch and driveway was perfect.
DRILLING – – For those girls who were struggling with the nailing, I used a tiny drill bit and pre-drilled their holes. Pre-drilling the holes makes it go was faster and they can get the nails straighter.
WRAPPING: for a kids craft, we just went with the basic, fill-in-the-shape method. Tie the string onto one nail, criss-cross them all across the shape, and then tie it off when there’s enough yarn filling it in.
That’s all there is to it!!! Enjoy having a kids craft day of your own!

I have some a butterfly string art wall hanging that I made when I was in elementary school. I don’t know why I never thought to teach my girls who to do it. I love how you made a painted background for yours. So cute!

I just used small nails, in the small packages that hang up in the hardware store. What a fun party idea!

approximate time from start to finish? Regular yarn? Thanks!

I just used regular yarn, and it can be completed in under an hour. Great questions!
