We spend a whole day this summer making tons of pom pom pens – so fun! And I have quick tutorial to show you how…
On to the tutorial!
First, grab yourself some Duck Tape® (um, I have tons more than I drug in for the picture) – I grabbed these at Walmart. Yes, and easy, you can buy Duck Tape at Walmart in the craft section. Aren’t the little rolls so cute? And they’re perfect for crafting!
I also grabbed clear pens so I could embellish the inside – but you can skip that part if you want. I could not figure out how to get that little cap off of the back, so I asked Trevor to help and he used pliers to pull the pen out of the front – of course! That’s the engineer for ya…
Then you can wrap the ink barrel in tape. Just be sure to keep it pretty thin – if it’s too thick, it won’t fit back in. I used a few small pieces to do the trick. And if you want a non-girly but fun pen, you can stop there:
But, on to the main tutorial – how to make the pom pom. Take a hunk of tape – 4-6 inches long – and fold it over on itself, but not quite even. You want to leave about 1/4 inch of the sticky side exposed, like shown below:
Then on the folded section, but slits about 1/4 inch apart as shown below. Be sure not to cut through the exposed sticky part:
Now, that sticky part is how you’ll attach it to your pen. Starting on the end of the tape strip, slowly wrap the tape around pen:
That’s it! For this one, I did a strip of zig zag, then a little lower on the pen I wrapped a strip of plain green, and then a little lower than that I wrapped another strip of zig zag. The possibilities are endless!
You can even use tape to embellish notebooks to match!
Fun, right?! So be sure to add Duct Tape®® to your Back-to-School shopping list so you can embellish all those boring school supplies 🙂 Be sure to follow @DuckBrand for tons of creative inspiration!
GIVEAWAY TIME!! You can Win a $100 Walmart Gift Card! To enter, leave a comment on this post stating what kind of Duck Tape® back to school themed craft you would make if you won the gift card.

I need to have enough supplies to make about 50 of these cute pom pom pens. Do you have an estimate of how many pens you can make with one 10 yd roll of duct tape? TIA!
Mandy Beyeler says
hmmm, great question, and I’m not helpful at all – I’m not sure! It would depend on how “fluffy” you make them and if you’re switching colors, etc.
