Today I want to touch on the topic that everyone wants to know about but that most people don’t talk about – – how to make money blogging…
Since it’s a new year, I figure everyone is making goals – maybe your goal is to make a little extra money on the side with your blog. (Last week I talked about how I make money with Paparazzi, in addition to my blog). I am the first to admit that I’m no expert at this topic – but I wanted to share a few things.
- First, along those lines of not being an expert – – just a few days ago I purchased the Mom Blog to Money Blog course from TipJunkie – click the button for more info:
- I make the most money from plain ole Google Adsense. It’s a great place to start. You can have up to 3 ads with them – utilize all 3.
- I love nRelate because it provides a service I need – it’s the widget that says “other posts like this one” and lists a few posts. In that list an ad is included and that’s how it’s monetized.
- I am part of several ad networks and have applied for a couple of more. Still feeling around to see what’s best.
- You can sign up for Social Spark if you’re interested in writing sponsored posts. It’s a great place to start. You’ll get small offers at first but as you do a few you’ll start to get bigger offers. I don’t take all the offers – I want to stick to things are relevant to my blog.
- You can also become an affiliate to places such as Amazon, Shabby Apple, etc. I don’t make too much from affiliate programs, but they’re still nice to have.
It’s $200 and I wasn’t sure I was willing to spend that, until I talked to Trevor and he said I need to treat my blog like a business, and that businesses provide professional development for their employees, etc. Also, I figured since she makes $12,000 a month from Adsense alone, I’m sure she has some tips I’m not implementing – and if I can use her tips to make an extra $20 a month, then the class will pay for itself in less than a year.
–My review so far is favorable – it’s got a great format – you read a lesson each day and there are several review steps at the end of action items you can do for that lesson. There are embedded videos to help explain things, and printable organizational sheets. I’ve only read lesson 1 and 2, and I’ve already implemented some things that I wasn’t doing on my blog – hopefully they will help increase my traffic a little. I can’t wait to see what tomorrow’s lesson will bring…
–I think that for those of you who are serious about wanting to earn money from your blog, this is a great resource. You can also become an affiliate through the site (I did), an added bonus.
Would you be interested if I just laid it all out there and did a review of my blog finances each month? Like what exact money I made, where it came from, etc??

Mandy,
I find this article to be so interesting and informative! Thank you for exposing some of the secrets behind making money through blogging. Although I don’t currently have a blog, I’ve thought about starting one and find this information to be invaluable. Yes, please give us more!

I’d say go for it! I’ve always wondered how bloggers make a living at it, and what their “living” was. If you’re willing to share I’d love to read about it!

I would love to hear the specific details about your monetization if you are willing to share. 🙂 I would also be interested in hearing how many hours you work at it. Bloggers often talk about a change increasing their traffic or income but they never say specifically how much it increased or how many hours of work that change took. It would also be great if you did an update after finishing the tip junkie course! I have been interested in it but I just don’t have that much to invest in the blog right now since I don’t know how much of a return I will get on it.

YES, please! Would love to hear the details. Also, tell how much time each week you devote to your blog. Thanks for the info!

That would be great!

I would love that! I had someone contact me earlier this year thinking about starting a blog with the hopes of quitting her full time job in 6 months to earn a full time income blogging. I gave her a dose of reality for how much I make blogging and I have been doing it for almost 3 years. She didn’t quit her day job!

Sounds very interesting to me & I admire your being so open & willing to help others through sharing.

Yes! It’s like the big secret no one really talks about.

I would love to hear more! Thanks for being willing to share!

Yes! I’ve heard the vague “oh, it pays like a full time job!” Thing before, and it would be so nice to know what that means, because that includes a spread like $100,000 wide. I know it can feel awkward, though, to talk specifics on income, and understand the shying away.
I’d like to know what your input is (both time and money) and how it relates to the cash output.

I would be very interested!
I have found that AdSense makes me almost nothing on my personal blog but makes decent money on another blog I have, but they have the same amount of traffic. Still trying to figure that one out. Would love any tips and ideas on monetising, and would love to hear your experience and what you’ve tried and how it’s performed.

thanks for the tips, not many bloggers are willing to lay it all out there so I definitely appreciate you for it! =)

I also agree that learning more from bloggers already making money (any amount) would be helpful…and since I’ve been dying to ask you about all this in person (but not being in close enough proximity to you to be ‘in person’), having you explain on the blog would be great!
Sophie says
I don’t want to know! It is personal and what is good money or a full time salary to one person is not the same for another. I am glad for people who can make money from their blog but don’t feel they are obliged to share everything.
Kathy says
I completely agree! If people want to know more they should attend a class that tells them specifics and pay for it. I like this blog but would probably quit following it if the information is posted.

I would sooooo love to hear! As a baby blogger it would be very educational for me =)
Kate @ A Creative Cookie says
YES! I am definitely thinking of doings more ads with my blog. 🙂

People in the US are so hesitant to talk about what they earn, but I think it helps everyone when we know what others make – in the work place it ensures that one person isn’t being paid far more or less than others so you know your worth and can market yourself that way. And in the blog world, I think we’re all curious how much money we could make if we really put our minds and talents towards it, so yes, I’m all for knowing how much you earn, how you make it, and even moreso, how much time you spend on your blog and how you choose what to feature. Obviously I can’t just quit my full-time job and jump into blogging, but it’s nice to know what kind of time commitment would yield certain amounts of income (make sense?).
Thanks for your info! It’s very appreciated.

I would totally be more interested! I would be very interested in learning how much you made in 2012 if you don’t mind me asking. Thank you Mandy!

I would love to hear. I’m planning on purchasing Laurie’s workshop hopefully within the next month or 2 but would really love to hear from someone first hand what they thought and if they’ve noticed an increase and traffic and income since implementing what they’ve learned. Thanks for being willing to share. 🙂 XO

I’ve thought about the tip junkie class, too. But it’s been one of those, well, I don’t really have the money, but… kinda things! I’d love to hear more about it. I’d also love to know more about how you get sponsors!

Thank you thank you thank you. I had no clue as to how this all works. I have a blog, I have more than one blog, and am interested in how to make money blogging.
I’d love to get more information.
