Have you heard of the Harlem Shake Videos that are all the rage?? the next big craze! And I have all the how-to on making one…
but first let me tell you about the one WE made…
We got together with another family and made one – – it was fun to do! And now I need your help sharing it, cause Trevor randomly asked me how many views I thought it’d get and I’m all “how about 1,500!” and it’s only at 50 – so I’m trying to prove I’m right 🙂
Ours is a spoof on Family Home Evening – a time where we gather as a family for a short lesson, sing a song, play a family game, have treats, etc. And so it’s lesson time – and then it busts into craziness. Some things to notice:
–can you find me?
–there’s a little mister sporting a mermaid costume
–did you see the random kid on top of the fireplace?
–Trevor is doing clapping push-ups
so here’s the video (it’s only 30 seconds!) watch in awe, then share with the world!
Now, on to How to Make a Harlem Shake Video:
–show the kids a few sample videos so they get the gist:
–set your camera on a tripod so that you’re filming from the exact same spot and angle.
–FIRST – you start with a normal situation. Everyone is doing something normal and boring. EXCEPT – one person, who is doing a slight dance. And here’s the catch – that person needs to be wearing a hat of some sort.
–the first segment rolls for 15 seconds. I suggest filming for 20-30 seconds, in case you need to cut some parts or whatever.
–SECOND – all craziness breaks loose. There should be lots more people in this shot than in the first one.
–give everyone a spot to stand so that everyone can be seen but still have room to boogie:
Bust out all the dress-ups and old costumes to add to the craziness. This segment is also 15 seconds long (from the 15 second to the 30 second mark in the song – it starts when the beat in the song drops low)
–use editing software to weld the 2 clips together. Also, to get the crazy section to look a little choppy, you can speed it up to 1.15 (1 is playing at real-life speed). Then you’ll want to slow down the last 1-2 seconds of the song.
If you make one, post the link, I want to see it! If you have no idea what I’m talking about, start browsing YouTube for “Harlem Shake” and you’ll be mesmerized wondering why in the world people are doing this. I wondered it too, and yet, here we are…
oh sweet goodness that was insanity! I just now found out about this ridiculousness but my Sister in Law and I have been really enjoying all of these hysterical videos on Youtube.
I enjoyed the use of the pool noodle!
LOL! Too cute! I’m still not really understanding what exactly the harlem shake is, except for some ridiculous dance moves & costumes! Pretty funny though!
It looks like you had a lot of fun. This dance craze is everywhere.

hahahahaha I love it so much! My husband just asked me about this today and I had no idea what it was
Well….that was a new experience for me. Craziness! 🙂 I went to YouTube and watched some more. There was even a tutorial on how to do the Harlem Shake. It was nothing like the videos I was seeing though. Great fun!
That was AWESOME, Mandy. Thanks for introducing me to the Harlem Shake phenomenon. I had no idea! Now, I wanna make one. Maybe with our small group….
