Every year we have a Blue and Gold Banquet for Cub Scouts and the boys each make a cake – some years it’s a contest, some years it’s just for fun. My son LOVES the fun of it! Last year his sister’s helped him make a Cookie Cake (always a hit!), but this year he went with a classic Blue and Gold theme. This post may contain affiliate links.
It looked awesome, but was SUPER easy to make – yes, it’s just box cake mix 😉 . Here are some images to pin the idea for later:
Checkerboard Cake Maker
My mom actually help him make the cake part – and she loves busting out her checkerboard cake maker.
He loved seeing the magic of the checkerboard (it’s just rings of colored batter) and explaining how it worked to his cub scout friends.
Then he assembled the layers and frosting.
Cub Scout Symbol Stencil
For a decoration idea, he brought me his uniform and pointed out a patch that he wanted to mimic – he wanted to put icing on the top in that shape. WELL, we’re not good at drawing!! So I had the idea to use my Silhouette Machine and cut out a stencil (you could also hand cut one.). We simply cut the design out of cardstock and then set it on top of the cake. Then we sprinkled on powder sugar all over then lifted up the stencil, and VOILA! It was so cool that it actually worked!
Cub Scout Cake Finishing Touches
By this time the frosting had dried a little too much, so we frosted a thin layer over the sides and top edges of the cake. Then he literally threw on gold sprinkles and they stuck to the sides.
It was a success!

This is such a lovely cake project. I would love to make something similar with my kids.
