T Shirt Pieced Pants

Yeah for a boy sewing project!  This one is awesome – it’s made from several old t shirts  so props to the upcycling.  These pieced pants look so cozy and fun – I wish I had made a pair for myself.

Simple pants are a great place to start beginning sewers.  This takes it up a notch because you need to piece together the fabric first.  I will show you a brief tutorial on how I put these pants together – here we go…
I cut rectangles of fabric and sewed them together.  I sewed them WRONG sides together so that the raw seam is on the outside of the pants.  A few of the strips I cut in half and then mixed in other colors – it makes a few vertical seams.  I cut the strips in different widths, etc. After sewing it together, you have a block of pieced fabric.  I repeated again to make 2 chunks of fabric.  Then I stacked them on top of each other, and cut out my pattern piece.

I first saw pants like this over at Kojo Designs – – she makes them a little differently and makes one big piece of fabric and then folds it over, so the two legs match up.  Head over to her tutorial to see that in action.  Here’s a visual of what I mean:

Okay, so after you cut out your two pieces, add any embellishements – I added a pocked on the side of one leg and a “W” near the bottom of the other leg.

For the waistband, I used ribbed knit and my tutorial for a Banded Waistband.  So the waistband is extra comfy and doesn’t even have elastic in it.

That’s it!  I thought they were awesome and showed them to my 4 year old who declared “but I don’t want colorful pants” – is he crazy?!  So I told him he could wear them just for pictures, and that we’d take picture of Beary the Bear.  But after pictures were done, he wore the pants the rest of day and other times since – guess colorful is maybe his style after all 🙂
