Today I want to show a quick and easy way to craft clothing for boys inspired by song lyrics….because when you see shirts on clearance for $2 you have to buy them for crafting purposes….
Some boy tshirts out there are just kind of lame. And my kids love them – how many spiderman decal shirts do I need?? So I am aiming for a shirt to showcase some other love. My little boys is obsessed with the song Pumped Up Kicks – when quizzing Trevor for ideas on what to sew for the Sew in Tune series, he suggested just making a song lyric tshirt – great idea!! Obviously this will work for any song!
I used my Silhouette Cameo iron-on vinyl for the words “Pumped Up” and the outline of “KICKS” but you could use fabric paint or draw with bleach or freezer stencil or anything like that. I had quite the time trying to get it to cut an outline of letters – I finally figured out a way and blogged about it at expressions vinyl, but I’ll post about it here sometime soon….they came out looking like this:
The real focus of the shirt is the appliqued letters. First I ironed on “wonder under” to my fabric – it’s iron-on that’s for both sides, so it allows you to iron fabric onto things. Anyways, iron it to the fabric, then cut out your letter shape. Then peel off the backing. Then iron it to the shirt where you’d like it to go. You could try omitting this step, but I thought it was a perfect way to hold the applique (fabric letter) while sewing and not have it slide around.
So you guessed it – the next step is to sew around each letter – I love the look of this!
Here’s an upclose view of the stitching – – just remember, imperfection means “handsewn with love”:
He is so excited about his new song-inspired shirt!
So excited, that he agreed to a little song and dance:
Does a little one you know have a song they love?? Turn it into a shirt – go try it!

I really need to lear how to sew! I got a sewing machine two years ago for Christmas and still haven’t used it! I can’t wait to have my craft room set up so that I can make an attempt to make something:) I love how the t-shirt came out. Hopefully someday I’ll be able to create something like that! Thanks for sharing!

This makes me even more excited to get my Cameo in a couple weeks. 🙂
He is too cute. My little guy LOVES Moves Like Jagger. Just wait until he’s older and hears Pumped Up Kicks and goes “THAT’S what that song said?!?” haha.

Do you realize that song is about a kid who shoots up the rich kids that have good sneakers? It’s basically about columbine and you made a kids shirt out of it.

I have just decided to get a Silhouette Cameo! I have been cutting out fabric for my hand sewn appliques for a few months now and recently realized I could get a machine to do this. I am so glad i found this exact post because it has me sold. This is EXACTLY what I need a cameo for lol! thank you!
