I’m excited to teach at the ModBee Quilt Conference all about Heat Transfer Vinyl! I know it’s a new idea for some quilters, but I really love it and think there’s awesome potential in how to use Heat Transfer Vinyl in quilting. Plus, you can make your own quilting and sewing tshirts!
Here are a couple of images so you can pin this idea to save it for later. This post may contain affiliate links.
Vinyl Cutting Machines
You might want to grab a Vinyl Cutting Machine – there are two machines to choose from:
—Silhouette Cameo – this is the one I love! If you think that you will want to tweak designs or design your own things, this is the machine that I recommend. They are having a DEAL right now!!! Use code SUGARBEE when you check out to get the deal of a machine for only $199 PLUS IT COMES WITH A FREE MINT MACHINE (that’s what you use to make custom stamps!)
—Cricut Explore – this is also a great machine. If you think that you are only going to use premade designs, this is the machine that I recommend. You can find a deal for it for $200 on Amazon HERE.
And YES, you can cut vinyl with scissors! You will want a machine if you’re doing words or intricate designs, but if it’s something simple you can definitely hand-cut, here are a couple of examples of that:
Heat Transfer Vinyl
If you’ve never worked with Heat Transfer Vinyl, be sure to check out my info on How to Use Heat Transfer Vinyl.
I get all of my Heat Transfer Vinyl from Expressions Vinyl – it’s my favorite and their shipping is SO fast!
Sew Happy Sewing Banner Idea
I just pulled this banner together using scraps of fabric – I sewed scraps together to form long strips:
Then I laid out the strips to see the shape of the banner that I wanted.
I sewed the edge strips on, then cut the angle in the bottom as shown below:
Then I sewed the bottom strips on. After it was pieced together, with right sides together I sewed the front and back piece all the way around, inserting loops at the top and leaving an opening for turning.
Then I turned it and added a little bit of quilting for extra detail:
And then after that I added the vinyl decal:
And topped it off with pom poms!!
Sew Happy SVG and Cut File
I have the FREE SVG and Silhouette Cut File for the Sew Happy Design – you can use it on a banner or even use it to make a tshirt!

Hi Mandy I was paper of the mod bee conference and I was wondering about the heat transfer vinyl. Which one and what color did you use? Can you use any color for a T-shirt. Also I have Cricut so can you tell me how to do a svg file? Thank you! Tricia

I used Heat Transfer Vinyl for the project, either Expressions Vinyl brand or Oracal, and I’m not sure which color it was, sorry! It was just some that I had in my stash 😉 . And yep, you can use any color for a tshirt! You should be able to download the SVG file to your computer and then when you have the Cricut software program open, you should be able to open the file in there. Hope that helps!!
