I think you all know that A&W Root Beer Floats are our go-to dessert in the summertime – – we are hooked!! They’re so yummy, and so easy, and so fun! We have them all the time as a fun family treat. To make it even more fun, recently we put together a Root Beer Float Bar – Movie Night. It was a perfect family evening!!
It was quick and easy to set up and I’ve got all the tips for you for when you are looking for a fun summer family activity – –
You can grab all your supplies at Walmart – you know I love Walmart! While there, I was even able to pick up that super-cute tiered metal tray – isn’t it perfect?! And we love grabbing Great Value things to supplement our parties – it makes everything so affordable and yummy.
You’ll need:
–A&W Root Beer
–Great Value Ice Cream
–Great Value Whipped Topping
–Mason Jar (YES, Walmart has mason jars too!)
–Straws, Spoons, trays, baskets, etc
Tips and Tricks to a Root Beer Float Bar
Backdrop – – I used our chalkboard for a simple backdrop. I hung a banner out of craft paper, and outlined it in chalk. I love using a chalk marker – it writes so great! I even used it on the craft paper
Pre-Scoop Ice Cream! This is my number 1 tip!! It makes float assembly super-fast and easy when the ice cream is right there and ready to go. Set up everything, and then right before you’re ready, scoop ice cream into balls and place in a bowl. Place that bowl in a tray of ice to keep it cold.
Options – some of my kids are traditional and love regular A&W Root Beer. Some of them think that the Diet A&W Root Beer makes their floats “crunchier”. So I buy both – that way everyone gets their preference and there’s plenty to go around!
Presentation – use trays and baskets to create sections and levels on your Root Beer Float Bar to make it visually interesting and fun. Grab baskets and trays while at Walmart and then supplement with things you may already have on hand. I also stuck with the craft paper theme and wrapped the whipped topping with it to have it match the banner.
Making a Root Beer Float
If you’ve never made a root beer float, you are MISSING OUT – they’re so so good!! Add several scoops of ice cream to a jar or cup. Pour in A&W Root Beer until ice cream is covered.
Top with whipped topping – –
Grab a straw and spoon and enjoy!!
Root Beer Float Bar – Movie Night!
An A&W Root Beer Float Bar is a perfect addition to family movie night!
Load up those floats!
We made our root beer floats and had them as the perfect treat to accompany our movie night. I always loved root beer floats when I was a kid, and that makes it extra special to be able to share the same treat with my kids. We are making memories. And I’m sure they will grow up and have movie nights and root beer floats with their kids. It’s tradition!
We LOVE family movie night!
August 6th is National Root Beer Float Day! Make sure you celebrate by making your own Root Beer Float Bar!!

Root beer floats are awesome. My sisters and I used to spend a week every summer in the country with my grandparents and they always made us root beer floats as a treat. They are so nostalgic to me. Fun idea to make them for movie night with your kids.
