Every Super Hero needs a cape! Today I’m going to show you how to make a Reversible Cape – you’ll want to make a bunch of Reversible Capes for all the kiddos in your life!
Do you know the Super Heros rules? These are from the movie, but are actually pretty profound and I love the message they send:
Rule #1: You don’t have to have super powers to be a super hero
Rule #2: A super hero must always conceal his identity to protect the ones they love
Rule #3: A super hero is friend to any being in need of rescue
Rule #4: A super hero does good for good, not for glory
And so I want to walk you through how to make these capes. The best part about them – they are reversible!
These are play capes, so they don’t have to be perfect. You’ll need 2 different fabric colors/patterns for each cape. Here I’m using blue and green. From each color cut a cape shape (as shown below), a circle (I traced a bowl), and a monogram letter.
As for the cape shape, you want to size it to the size of your child. You can see in the picture below that I made a smaller one for my little kiddo, and a bigger one for my oldest:
For the neck, you’ll just cut a large circle out. Then when you fasten it, it will cinch down and pull up on the shoulders for a good fit:
The way you put this together is backwards – you do the monogram first. Sew the monogram to the opposite color circle, attaching it with a tight zig zag stitch. Do that with the other color set as well. Then with the same zig zag stitch, attach that circle (with the monogram now on it) to the back of the opposite color cape, and do that for both cape pieces:
Now, sew both cape pieces to each other, with right sides together. Leave about a 4 inch opening unsewn along the bottom of the cape. Then through that opening, turn the cape right-side out. I then topstitched around all the edges on the cape. Sew on the velcro to the neck and you’re ready to be a hero! Which can be a tiring job 🙂
