Let’s talk hardwood floors. We installed ours completely ourselves. I was hoping to find the timelapse video of that process, but it’s on Trevor’s computer somewhere, so I’ll save that for another post and try to go into more of the details of the whole process. Anyways, in summary, we went to a sketchy place and bought discount oak wood flooring. Installed it ourselves (of course, taking longer than we anticipated). And then finished it ourselves as well – sanding, dusting, self-distress (that was the fun part!), mopping on stain, more sanding, dusting, clear sealer topcoat. It was very labor intensive. But the hardest part was choosing the stain color – the floors set the whole feel of the house, so it had to be right. We went with a gray floors – I love that they’re a little out-of-the-norm, and everyone notices them when they stop by to visit. They are a mix of ebony and weathered gray stain, yet warm tones can still show through from the oak. Here you can get a good look at them in our family room, as the light pours in on them from the deck:
The challenge now is to keep them clean 😉 – – I’ve had some wood flooring before, but never the entire main living area. It’s a challenge, so when I had the opportunity to try the new Dirt Devil® 360° Reach™ I was for sure going to give it a go!
I am really liking it so far – I love that it’s lightweight, so I can take of dusty stairs, no problem. And also no problem is that my kiddos can use it with ease (wahoo!)
Previously I’ve been using a dust mop to try to keep the floors semi-clean (it’s so DUSTY – we’re in the country, plus we’re still working on finishing touches, so the dust from construction is non stop) – I just love how this has the vacuum feature built in to the dust mop, so it vacuums as you go. It’s nice not to have a big pile of gunk left when I’m done – the Dirt Devil® 360° Reach™ makes cleaning easy.
I was thinking all flooring when I was anticipating it’s arrival – but when it came I realized there was much more. Tons of awesome attachments – my favorite beyond the basic one is the attachment made specifically for ceiling fans – so smart! We all know how dusty those get – and they’re touch to reach, and when I do get up there to wipe them off, I’m just spreading that dust all over my bed, etc. Well with this, I can reach the fan from the ground (yep, I’m a shorty!), and it dusts, and it vacuums the blades while it dusts, so it’s not spreading dust everywhere – love that! Also, sneak peak of our bedroom (we’re at the mostly-unpacked but nothing-on-the-walls stage of moving in) – –
My biggest cleaning tip is to do it all one in swoop. While you have your #DirtDevil360Clean out, go ahead and do the floors and stairs and ceiling fans and even couches, etc – it doesn’t take that long, and then you’re done and done. I love getting it all done at once and moving on – that’s my tip for you!
Looking to grab a Dirt Devil® 360° Reach™ ?? The special package price of $149.99 is available at https://buydirtdevil.com and includes an additional attachement package valued at $75 (wahoo, bonus!!) – it’s only while supplies last. Awesome features are the 4-in-1 Stick Vac so you can literally go from floors to ceilings to couches in seconds – powered stair and upholstery tool, extended reach, long power cord, pivoting extension tool – you name it, it’s covered!

Very cool! We have all hardwoods in our house, and I’ve been on the look out for a vacuum cleaner since I’m getting annoyed with using a broom all the time. Can’t wait to check it out!

Getting it all done at once and then moving on sounds like smart advice. You’re right about the challenge being to keep the floors clean after the initial work.

I love this idea! I have so many times admired and relished the simple pine flooring in the Swedish and farmhouse interiors. You make it sound so simple and easy. Thanks for the inspiration.
