I’ve learned that the best way to buy really cool knit fabric is to scour thrift stores for clothing made out of it and then repurpose. Because I can only seem to find plain knit fabric at my fabric stores. So it puts me in the mode to always be buying knit items in large sizes at thrift stores…
So even though these pants aren’t from a fun print, they’re from a tshirt, because I just have in my mind that large tshirts = fabric to use.
I was at goodwill outlet digging through the bins, and I fount the cute green striped shirt for my Kindergartner – then next to it in the pile was an XL men’s shirt in a color that exactly matched one of the stripes – I knew it’d be perfect for a matching pair of leggings. And what’d the outfit cost me, like $0.75 total (you pay by weight at that place).
So I used my Favorite Legging Pattern from Go To Patterns, the Go To Leggings (affiliate link) – I love that it’s so simple and has a good fit – I use it over and over. This time for the waistband I just used the sleeve from the t shirt – how easy is that?!
And when I cut the pattern out I was sure to use the t shirt hem as the bottom of the leggings so that they would already be hemmed – another check for easiness!
She loves cozy and bright, so this whole look is perfect. I can’t remember how long it took me to make those, but I would guess like 15 minutes – with no hemming or adding elastic at the waist or anything, it really came together quickly.
Have you discovered the joy of using old tshirts in your sewing projects?? If not, try it! You’ll be hooked!

Cute leggings! I just bought that pattern and I can’t wait to try it out. I buy thrift clothes to re-purpose but I tend to forget I have them. I should go dig through my bin and see what I find! 🙂
