Flower Hair Pin Tutorial

We will actually be making up some small flowers to go on a bobbie pin…and then in our hair. I have short hair, but even I get bugged by my bangs…and I wear bobbie pins.

I don’t really enjoy having the plain big stick looking things poking out of my hair, so I try to find ones that have a little flower or pompom on the end.

Because you are making your own you can easily customize them to match an outfit, or stand out crazy like- in flouresent colors. Either way, they are a great way to accessories or to make as a gift for friends.

Let’s talk about how to make a Hexagon Flower Bobbie Pin.

SUPPLIES

2″ X 2″ scrap fabric squares- 3 per bobbie pin
Bobbie Pins
needle and thread

HEXAGON HAIR PIN TUTORIAL

Make a few flowers to put in your hair or give as gifts

Print off the 2″ Hexagon template on Card Stock or heavy paper and cut one out.

1) Trace the hexagon with a pencil on the wrong side of the fabric

2) Cut out with pinking shears {or regular scissors if that is what you have}

3) Layer 3 hexagon shapes on top of each other- right sides facing up

4) Fold in half and take a few stitches with the needle and thread

5) Place the bobbie pin on the back next to the stitches and continue sewing stitches, catching the bobbie pin end to secure. Make sure you are going through all the layers of fabric. You don’t want one to fall off!

6) Fold the fabric in half again and secure with a few more stitches- this will make more of a bushy flower.

7) Snip the folded fabric in a few spots- make sure your cuts don’t go to the center or meet {that will make your petals fall off!}

8) Knot the thread and cut

9) Fluff up the flower with your fingers

10) Place in hair and look cute!

I only sewed one flower per bobbie pin, but you could totally stuff the pin with multiple flowers and have it all fluffy. Make a few and put on a card with a cute note. Great for gifts for friends, or backup little presents or stocking stuffers.
