So as mentioned earlier, I am loving my new background! I also have several paper backgrounds that hang in the garage, but you never know when you’ll need a portable stand for a background. You can purchase a Background Stand if you’re not the DIY type, but if you want to be thrifty, I have a tutorial today for a homemade version, using inexpensive PVC pipes – – –
On New Year’s Eve day I had the grand idea to have a impromptu Photo Booth at our party that night – – I mentioned it to Trevor and he thought he could whip something up – and it’s perfect.
I came down to him putting it together minutes before the party:
And then after all that I kind of forgot about doing the photobooth – and when I remembered, I couldn’t get the photobooth app on my phone to work correctly. Anyways, we did get this picture:
So, the way this goes together – – The two side pieces are glued into formation. And then the 3 pieces (one on the top, 2 on the bottom) that go across aren’t glued, so that I can pull the stand apart for storage when it’s not in use.
Then you hang a fabric sheet or background paper or a professional background or whatever you have with just some cheapo clips at the top. That’s it!
I don’t have exact measurements, but I know it’s 5 feet tall and 5 feet across. You stare at the picture to see what kind of elbow/corner PVC pieces he used, and meanwhile I’ll ask him and let you know….
oh….my wheels are turning…
This is great! I’ve been thinking about doing something like this – I definitely need a large backdrop that I can roll out for photos to set in front of the clutter! And something interchangeable! PVC seems like it would be the perfect lightweight solution! Thanks for sharing!
Love it. I need this.
I would definitely be interested in this for all the pictures I take for my blog. Great! Thanks Linda
Great idea! I’m still ghetto, I just use a wall for a background 🙂
Oh, I love this! I tend to still use a wall, or maybe a piece of fabric that I tape to it for a change. I am definitely going to get my husband on this project for sure 🙂
I totally need one of these!!
GREAT idea!! Pinning!
awesome! I would really like to have the particulars on how to build this…
Great Idea!
This is awesome!
Hi! I love love this idea. I am going to head to home depot today. Do you know the dimensions of the pipes?
I don’t know the specific dimensions – sorry!
I am going to make 2 of these and use them for a party to flank the band, one on either side..We are going to use mesh fabric attached to the top pole by shower curtain hooks and then clip pictures all over it!!! Thank you so much for giving my project a name!!! A BACKDROP!!!
I love this idea! How much did this cost, approximately? I’m looking to do something similar, but my budget is cheap because I’m in college, haha.
sorry, I’m not sure on the cost, but it’s not too expensive
I made something similar about 2 years ago. I can say that it only cost me about $20, and that included buying the pipe cutters. Mine is 5-6 feet wide, and I used 1/2 inch pipe because it was cheaper. I would definitely use 3/4 to 1 inch to do it again(which I will be doing soon), and I will also try your design. I had some issues with mine wanting to tip, but that could be because I was using it with younger kids 🙂 I am guessing it will only cost about $20 again with the bigger pipe and fittings.
