I love a great kid shorts pattern. I’m sure the first one that a lot of you think of is the one from Dana at MADE. Me too. My son is about the same age as hers, so when she put out the basic pants pattern in that one size, I was super excited that it was just what I needed! Throw-back pics…

Well, what about the other kids?? No fear – there’s now a Basic Kid Shorts pattern that includes all sizes from 12months to 10 years. Love that. I did some pattern testing with my 10 year old, and it was awesome, as was to be expected.
This first pair I made with a random sheet I had laying around to make sure it the size fit, etc. I made them extra long because that’s how he likes shorts, although this might have been a little too extra.
My serger happened to already have yellow thread in it, so I went with that and sewed all the seams on the outside. It sewed up really quickly because I didn’t even hem it – just ran the serger everywhere. Then where I needed to I sewed down the serge.
There’s a double row on the hem for some added interest:
I love that they are a flat front, but still elastic in the back for comfort and ease of fit. I even whipped him up a second pair when Cow Appreciation Day rolled around.
I wouldn’t recommend telling a 10 year old that you need a picture of the back of the pants – you know..
Anyways, if you need a shorts pattern, this is my go-to: Kid’s Shorts. If you’ve never sewn a pair of shorts, you should. They go together pretty easily and once you make one pair, you’ll make the others that much quicker. I know we’re rolling into fall, but there are plenty of shorts-wearing days left!
adorable!
