I’ve decided I NEED more party props in my life (in particular, I’m on the hunt for a milk glass cake stand – keep your eyes out for me!) and so I whipped together this Rustic Wood Cupcake Stand. Rustic is sure in big right now, and I love the look. And it makes for thrifty ways to incorporate trends – cause sticks are free 🙂 I’ve seen this type of cupcake stand around, so it’s nothing new, but I thought I’d you show how we made ours:
I just love how it turned out!!
First, we just used some logs that were already cut for firewood. My brother was over and he was super nice to cut me a few slices. I wanted them to be varied in size – a large, medium, and small tier. He just used a chainsaw to cut off the ends of a large, medium, and small log. The bark rim came off of a couple of tiers because the blade was kind of dull and required vigorous cutting, but I think it would have stayed on if we were using a sharp, fresh chainsaw blade. He also cut a small branch into a couple of chunks for the posts inbetween the tiers.
Next Trevor took over – I just needed it all assembled. I assumed you’d just screw it all together, but he went above and beyond. He drilled holes in each piece and used wooden dowel rod pins to hold it together (as shown in the pics below) – this is better because you won’t see any screws or fasteners showing.
If you want to seal it, you can spray the stand with a clear coat. I haven’t done that yet, but I plan to in the future. I love how the slices are imperfect and the “handmade” feel of it all.
And it works great too! A sneak peek of an upcoming post…

This would be so cute even as just a cake stand! Love this idea of a rustic log stand mixed with pretty and pink cupcakes!

Did you Sanitize (de-bug) the logs before using them? If so, how? Bleach?
Mandy Beyeler says
I just cleaned them off – – I wasn’t too worried about it since the food wasn’t touching the logs directly. I’m thinking you could put them in the oven on low for a while to sanitize them if you want? great question!

hi,
Could you tell me where you purchased your cupcake wrappers?
Thanks !
Mandy Beyeler says
I actually made them – I used scrapbook paper from Michaels and a template on my Silhouette cutting machine – sorry, I know that’s not very helpful!

How long/wide are the logs in between and the depth/diameter of the slices?
