Hello Sugar Bee Friends! It’s Ariean from OneKriegerChick here to share a festive Christmas decor idea. Are you getting into the holiday spirit? Me too, although I’m trying really hard to hold off on decorating until after Thanksgiving. The red and plaid just seems to be calling my name…
Do you ever look through magazines or catalogs and think something is so cute, but you could either make it yourself or couldn’t possibly spend that amount on said item? I do that all. the. time! In fact, this project was completely inspired by a current Pottery Barn Kids catalog. Here’s the original as seen HERE at Pottery Barn Kids. So cute, right! I just had to have one for myself, but was not about to spend $79 on it!
Ironically, I had just purchased this cut wood shape from Hobby Lobby for 50% off with no exact plans of what I was going to do with it. As soon as I saw the picture in the magazine, I knew exactly what I was going to make. It’s so quick and easy- You won’t believe it!
Supplies needed:
- Wood Cutout Shape
- Red Spray Paint
- White Vinyl (Cut into Merry Christmas and two pine-like branches)
- Chalk pen
- Optional: Ribbon for embellishment
I must have skipped taking a photo of spray painting the board, but that’s what I did first. Then I applied the vinyl cutouts and drew three berries with a chalk pen.
Next…this is really hard to see…I used a pencil to write the wording: The Krieger Family. You could absolutely leave this part off, though.
I went over the pencil lines with the chalk pen. You can see that it bled a tiny bit…I think it’s from the type of wood. You really cannot tell unless you look super close like I was doing with my camera.
Allow the chalk pen to dry, embellish with a bow, and you have an adorable personalized ornament door hanging for a fraction of the cost…

I’m curious how large the ornament is? I don’t see it online at Hobby Lobby and I’d like to get an idea of size.
Hi Stacie! I’m so thrilled you like it! I apologize- I should have included that detail in the post. It’s 19.5 inches wide by 22 inches in length. They had other shapes and sizes too. Hope you are able to locate one!

To take the idea yet a step further, the wood piece you got from Hobby Lobby could be used for just that, a template. You then use that template and draw the pattern out on a piece of foam board. These could be hung/displayed with no weight factor to consider by using some double sticky tape, and allow you to put up several on either an outside wall or interior wall.
