When you love to create things, making gifts is a given 😉 Baby presents are especially fun – I love to make a Personalized Baby Outfit for a new mom-to-be – it’s something they wouldn’t be able to find for themselves in the store. I used to use my embroidery machine to add a name to a onesie, but lately I’ve loved using vinyl – it’s quicker and I have access to tons more cute font choices.
If you like making custom things, this is right up your alley!
First up, let’s tackle the onesie – sometimes I just give a few onesies instead of an outfit. I use my Silhouette Cameo machine to cut everything – it makes it so easy. I would highly recommend the Silhouette Cameo, and here’s an awesome bundle deal. Yep, I cut fabric with it for the “O” – I just ironed on adhesive backing to make it a little stiffer, then ran it through my cutting machine. You can see how it gave a nice, clean cut:
Next up I cut the name out of Heat Transfer Vinyl (I buy all my vinyl from Expressions Vinyl – they have the best deal I can find, and their shipping is lightning fast!!) – – remember remember, when cutting heat transfer vinyl, you put the shiny side down on your mat and in your softward you flip the image – so it’s like you’re cutting it out from the backside:
From there, I ironed down the “O” and then I stitched around it, mostly for the look:
Then I added the vinyl. You can totally do it with an iron, but recently I got a heat press and I was SUPER excited to try it out. If you plan on doing a lot of heat transfer vinyl, I think a heat press is the way to go!
And just like that, voila, the onesie is done!
I made the pants using the Free Baby Leggings pattern from Shwin and Shwin and modified it a little to use a knit waistband instead of elastic – I even used vinyl as a tag in the pants (saw that trick on A Girl and A Glue Gun). I grabbed that awesome knit from Girl Charlee.
I used the knit headband tutorial from Girl. Inspired. but instead of sewing the opening shut, I used some Speed-Sew I had on hand – it worked awesomely!
I will definitely be using it again and am super glad I had it in my craft room:
And that’s all there is to it!! It’s so fun to give personalized gifts!
This is so stinkin adorable!!
