I have a pretty deep love for almost all things IKEA, and I’ve been eyeing the over-the-sink chopping board for a while. But of course it didn’t fit on the sink that we installed in our new kitchen, doh! But with a few quick adjustments, we made it work — and I took pictures along the way so I could share the Over-the-Sink IKEA Cutting Board Hack with you – –
It’s a simple IKEA hack that you can tackle to give yourself a custom over-the-sink cutting chopping board. It starts with the Domsjo Chopping Board.
Let’s dive right in – – first set it on your sink so you can see how much it hangs over – mine was about an inch. Mark that spot.
You’re aiming to have it to where the wood hangs over the sink and the handles sit on each side edge of the sink:
Then take the handles off that end of the cutting board – they just unscrew:
Then cut the board using the mark you make – –
After that, sand the edge so it’s not a harsh cut edge:
Now, using the handle that you removed previously, set it back on and mark the placement of the screws:
Then you’ll need to predrill the holes so that the wood in the board won’t split.
After that, just attach the handle by screwing it on, and you’re good to go.
I love how I have a perfect-fit custom cutting board to chop on – I use it all the time!!
But I will warn you – – wood cutting boards aren’t meant to go in the dishwasher (I found out the hard way….)
Funny that you should say that about wood cutting boards should not go in the dishwasher! I recently found out about that the hard way, too! Let’s just say that I can never get the pieces that came out to go back together!! And it had been my absolute favorite (handed down from my Dad). May it rest in pieces!
Great idea Mandy! Hugs and blessings, Cindy
