Motivational Running Headbands are all the rage! So of course, let’s DIY them! You can make them out of old t-shirts or scrap knit fabric or even performance type fabric, whichever you prefer. Then add your favorite quote and all your running pals will wish they were you ;). I’ll walk you through how I made these for my daughter – in her first year of cross country at school.
Aren’t they super fun? I’m sure you’ll come up with lots of fun motivational or quirky quotes to including on your own running headbands.
Also, before I get started with the tutorial – there’s a contest!! You can WIN a $50 Gift Certificate from Expressions Vinyl – just head over and vote for your favorite project (hint hint, the running headbands are really cool!!)
Motivational Running Headbands
You’ll need:
–heat transfer vinyl (I always buy mine from Expressions Vinyl – affiliate link)
–knit fabric, at least 12×18 inches
First, cut your fabric into a rectangle, 12×18. For a slightly less-wide headband (which is what I ended up doing for my daughter, tween size), cut it 10.5 x18. Make sure the stretch (when you pull on the fabric it extends) on the long side, the 18in side.
Then fold your fabric in half, right sides together so that it is now 6 inches by 18 inches. Sew along the top long side. I serged mine, but that’s not necessary – if your machine has a stretch stitch, use that.
Now you have a tube of fabric – you can turn it right-side out.
Next up, cut your quote out of heat transfer vinyl. IF you’ve never used heat transfer vinyl, you can check out THIS Heat Transfer Vinyl basics video.
Weed out your vinyl, then iron it on to your right-side out flat rectangle of fabric. I made sure the seam was at the top, slightly on the back side.
Once you have the vinyl on, iron one end 1/2 inch turned in hem. Then insert the other end and sew the opening closed.
Try it on – it’s so cozy!!
And now head on out and enjoy that run!!
