Last week I had a productive afternoon and cranked out this awesome hoodie:
And I made it out of a couple of old t-shirts, which means I didn’t even pay for fabric, and it’ll be light-weight enough so that it’s not to hot to wear. It’s a win-win! I will be making more of these for sure.
I used the Hangout Hoodie Pattern from Peek-A-Boo Patterns. And they are having a whole fall tour – come check them out on Saturday for a big pattern giveaway (and to vote on who’s look in the tour you loved best – like this hoodie I made, hint hint )
So, let’s talk about this pattern – – it looked like it might be a little tricky, so that’s why I picked it, so as to push myself just a little. BUT, it was way easier than I thought – it’s just a shirt that you add a hood onto, and then you put binding around the neckline. It looks like I am a sewing pro, even though it was simple to do – love that! If you’ve tried making a knit shirt before, then you can try this. And bonus, Naptime Crafters just did a Hangout-Hoodie sew-along, so there are extra step-by-step photos over there.
Like I mentioned, I just used old tshirts – – it’s a great way to get knit fabric, so be sure to keep on the hunt for awesome prints/stripes/colors etc.
Because I was using a cut-up shirt, I had to improve to get all the pieces cut out – the stripes on the sleeves are going the wrong way (up and down instead of round and round) but eh, it works!
When I sew something, I like to make it a little big so that it will last the kiddo longer. He’s 4, but I made him a 5 – I’m hoping he can wear it this fall and next fall. So that’s why it looks just a little big.
I think part of the fun of sewing is that you can add personal touches. Here I sewed on a “W” onto the pocket, before I assembled it. Love it!
It was a huge hit with my preschooler:
I think he loved it even more because he “helped” make it – holding the ruler, pushing buttons on my sewing machine, picking out the orange trim color, etc. Part of sewing for kids is really involving them so that they have a vested interest in wearing the creation. We cranked it out in an afternoon. That evening I had a meeting and wasn’t home for bedtime – it was fun to go in and check on him and see that he had worn the shirt to bed – that’s true love, when they won’t take it off.
(um, ignore that giant mess on my sewing table….)
So anyways, if you’re looking for a fun pattern with a hood, you’ll use this time and time again. Check out the Hangout Hoodie (affiliate link).
