Several years ago I had a friend come to me with this “my DAD deserves a pat on the back” shirt idea — we made “GRANDPA” ones too. Get it? – hand prints on the back – clever, right?!? Perfect for a DIY Father’s Day Shirt!
FRONT:
I embroidered the words on the front with my machine, but you could use iron-on transfer cut with a Silhouette/Cricuit, or even fabric markers (wouldn’t that be cute if the kids’ wrote it).
BACK:
I painted fabric paint directly only my kid’s hand, being sure to have them open it wide. Then I had them carefully lower it to the shirt and place their hand down. I then pushed on their hand to help transfer the paint.
When I made the first version I outlined the handprints and had the kids’ names on them:
But then we had another child join the ranks, so a new shirt was in order. The handprints aren’t near as nice, but I don’t think it matters too much:
And here he is, super dad! I’m sure he loves posing for the craft blog……
Plenty of time before Father’s Day — go make one – you can do it!

OH MAN,I like it even better now that I’ve seen the handprints on the back! That really is great! Although I suggested freezer paper, I thought about that for about 2 minutes before I went to the Silhouette store and ordered heat transfer. 😉

I think I’ll be doing this for the grandpas. I’ll need to hire some help (aka aunt or grandma) to get my 2 month old’s handprint though! 🙂

I know this idea is from forever ago but I LOVE it so I just had to comment! I am totally getting my girlfriends together so we can have a craft day with the kids!

What kind of paint do you recommend using? I’m worried it’ll wash off or fade over time!
Mandy Beyeler says
I used fabric paint, or you can use regular acrylic paint with fabric medium mixed in to it. It hasn’t washed off. Great question!

Thank you for sharing! I used cafepress.com to make the shirt and will put the handprints on the back when it arrives. Such a good idea!
