Back-to-School crafting is in full force! What are you creating for it? This year my oldest daughter will be in middle school, and I figure that she will need all the organization she can get. I made these super-cute Fabric-Blocked Drawstring Bags that will have endless use possibilities. A way to carry gym clothes or extra supplies for art class or library books or ANYTHING! It’ll be a great way to organize the insides of her backpack;)
These are a simple sewing project, and would be a great project for a beginner to tackle. And it’s a perfect project to showcase all that super fun fabric you have.
It was fun to accept the challenge from Waverly Inspirations to create a back-to-school project from the suprise supplies below – –
Fabric Blocked Drawstring Bag
to make 2 bags you’ll need:
- 1/2 yard of two coordinating fabrics ( I used these fun prints from Waverly Inspirations found at Walmart – I love that I can grab fabric while I’m knocking out my shopping list!)
- coordinating ribbon
- sewing notions (machine, thread, scissors, etc)
First up, cut 2 pieces of each fabric into 12×15 inch rectangles (or whatever size you’d like your bag). Then cut those into 3 pieces – my middle section was 6 inches wide.
Now swap the middles.
Then for the front and back of each back, sew the pieces back together as laid out. You’ll end up for 4 pieces:
Press open the seams from the fabric blocking:
Take the front and back of each bag, and sew them right sides together. Then hem the top to make a casing for the ribbon by turning under the top edge 1/4 in and then hemming 1 1/2 inches. After sewing that seam, sew another 1 inch above that – this will create the tunnel, or casing, for the ribbon to run through:
Use your seam ripper to take out one of the side seams where the casing runs. Using a safety pin on the end of the ribbon, string it through the bag and cut to length. Use fabric glue or a lighter to seal the ends of the ribbon to prevent fraying.
You can see how creating the casing provides just a little bit of gather at the top of the bag:
I love how these turned out!!
