Can you believe it – already that time of year to think costumes! If you’ve been reading for a while, you know that I love all things simple. And I’ve got just that kind of idea for you today in the Renaissance Girl Costume – –
My niece was headed to the local Renaissance Festival and wanted to dress up – so her mom came up with this fun and easy costume idea. I think it came out great and it was simple enough that anyone can tackle the project. I have a tutorial to walk you through making the belt. This can work for a variety of costumes – elfkin fairy, you know, whatever works.
80+ blog buddies and I got together to bring you 80+ DIY Halloween costumes, including this fun belt idea of mine. I’m teaming up with Really Awesome Costumes to bring you tons of easy ideas to craft up DIY Halloween costumes for everyone including your pets, family costumes, and even a trunk or treat idea! So be sure to see all those ideas at the bottom of this post.
You’ll need:
–flowy dress (we found this one at the thrift store!)
–faux leather
–ribbon
–cardboard
–hot glue (yep, it’s no sew!)
This was our inspiration photo – – as you can see, the dress would look good in any color, we just happened to find a white one. It’s the statement belt that really pulls everything together, and it’s a fun costume piece to recreate.
First cut out cardboard pieces of the belt – I probably should have made a template of these, sorry! We just eyeballed it. It may be easiest to draw the main center piece on paper folded in half so you can get it symmetrical, and then trace it onto cardboard.
Lay it out with the dress so you can make sure you have the size of pieces that you want:
Using the cardboard as a template, cut out of the faux leather, leaving about a 1/2 inch edge extra all the way around. And warm up that glue gun 🙂
Now simply fold the edges of fabric around the cardboard, gluing it into place:
Repeat for all the belt pieces:
Then I simply glued them to a ribbon – I used two parallel ribbons, just because I liked how it looked. To wear, just tie the ribbon around the waist. That’s it! It’s not connected to the dress just in case you need to use it for some other event – it keeps it versatile.
The belt will cinch up the dress, which also helps.
Top with brown boots and a hippie headband and it’s a whole look. It’d also be great to have a bow and arrow or sword or something.
Tons of other super simple costume ideas at my other post here – enjoy!
