Crochet Bow Garland (with giveaway!)

There is just something about fall and crochet projects – they go hand-in-hand (ha, literally!).  I’ve been busy making a super fun Crochet Bow Garland, in fun Christmas colors.  I just love this nontraditional palette with the turquoise added in.  If you are a beginner crocheter, you can do this!  It’s just a chain with double crochets, nothing too complicated.

This is extra fun because I’m part of a  week long crochet garland blog hop – brought to you by me and 6 other amazing bloggers!  Every blogger will be posting a different crochet garland tutorial – and they are all so cute! Here’s a sneak peek at all the projects.

I used Red Heart Soft Yarn in colors:

• Teal
• Turquoise
• White
• Seafoam
• Really Red

They really compliment each other well!

Let’s get started:

Chain 90 stitches.  Turn. In the 2nd stitch from the end, double crochet. Chain 1.  Skip a crochet and then double crochet in the next stitch.  Repeat to the end. So bascially you’re doing a double crochet in every other stitch, with a chain stitch inbetween the double crochets.  You could double crochet in every single one and eliminate the chain stitches, but I was wanting to speed things along 😉  Tie the tails together at the end.

Next up you’re going to assemble the bow – I wanted an easy way to make a bow with tails, so I went with this method.  Lay the strand out with tails crossed as shown below.  If you’re making a chain, be sure that you’ve looped the strand into the bow next to it.

Then grab the place where the tails cross and put it on top of the upper part of the strand and tie a yarn around that whole intersection, as shown below:

Then you can wrap the yarn around several times to define the middle.  Then flip the bow over and tie the ends of the string together on the back, as shown below:

Then just keep laying out the bow pattern and tieing them into place, being sure to interlock them as you go:

Now, I wanted them to hold their bow shape, even as they hung.  To stiffen them, I made my own fabric stiffener. Just part glue, part water.

I thought of this the day the project was due, so I ended up just brushing it on because I had limited time to let it dry.  If I were to do this again, I would dip the entire strand in the stiffener first, then tie the bows, then let it dry overnight.  I think that would have made them much stiffer.

The brushing on made them a little stiffer, but not as much as I had hoped.

But it still turned out super cute!!
