Everyone has the one cookie recipe that they love. It’s usually the cookies they grew up eating. These are mine – as a youth, when I was bored, I made cookies.
That holds true today, and now I have helpers that join in the fun. I love whipping up a batch of fresh cookies and eating them warm until I’m half-sick from the deliciousness of it all. These are best with chocolate chips and butterscotch chips, but I was out of butterscotch chips when I made this batch. I attribute the recipe to my mom, but I’m sure it came off of the back of a chocolate-chip bag long ago.
¾ C shortening
½ C sugar
1 C packed brown sugar
1 egg
½ tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1 tsp vanilla (the kind from Mexico is the best)
1/4 C water
1/4 C water
3 C oatmeal
1 C flour
1 bag chocolate chips (optional: add butterscotch chips or M&Ms)
Mix ingredients in order listed. Stir in chocolate chips. Drop by spoonfuls onto baking sheet.
Bake 350° for approx 12min or until golden brown.
Here’s the dough:
And here it is dropped out ready to go:

I made these tonight & they were awesome. I was definitely skeptical when I saw that water was an ingredient in the cookie. I used whole wheat flour in the recipe and it made me feel like they might actually be healthy for me 🙂 When you say “1 bag choc chips”… is that 12 oz? I just forget because I buy in bulk.
Thanks for a new family favorite 🙂

Thanks for the scoop tip. I bought a cheap one once and was not happy. Have you tried their garlic press? I had the same experience with that — I’m off to buy the scoop. Your cookies sound delish, any favorite chips?

Oh boy- my husband is always asking me to make oatmeal raisin- I prefer chocolate chip – so I compromise & make him his with raisins & save a bit of dough out to mix in my chips & then I have my own little stash. 🙂
