Making salt dough ornaments is super easy but loads of fun. You likely already have everything you need in your home. Follow these basic instructions to get you started.
Hey Sugar Bee Craft Readers!!
I’m Melissa from This Girl’s Life Blog where I like to share bits of my favorite things DIY projects and crafts, some yummy recipes and the occasion beauty or fashion post thrown in as well.
I’m excited to be able to share a guest post with you today and we are making one of my favorites, salt dough ornaments. If you have a young crafter in your family this is a great kid-friendly activity to get them involved in.
What you will need…
1 Cup Salt
4 Cups Flour
1 1/2 Cups (warm) Water
Rolling Pin (optional)
Cookie Cutters (optional, but recommended)
Directions…
-
Combine salt and water, then add flour. You can add extra flour if you need more.
-
Knead until dough forms.
-
Use a rolling pin (glass or can works too) to roll out your dough until it’s approximately 1/4″ thick.
-
Make shapes to your choosing. If you want to make the hand impression just do as you would a normal hand print. I think it works best if you have your fingers closed instead of spread apart. Cut around the print. I like to cut just in a circle but you can cut around the shape of the hand. It really is just a matter of how you like it best.
-
Poke hole in the top with a straw. Don’t forget to do this part otherwise you won’t be able to hang your ornament.
-
Bake at 250 for 2 hours.
Extra embellishments… You can layer the dough by using water to stick the layers together. You can see this done in my finished heart. Think about using stamps or letter punches to spell words as well.
Paint and decorate!! 🙂
That was the final step. If you are looking for something fun to do with the whole family this holiday season making ornaments will be a hit.
