Did you know that the Silhouette Machine does rhinestones? I knew it, but I had no idea how it worked, so I always just glazed over anything about the rhinestones. Well, Silhouette sent a Rhinestone Kit that I could try out – and NOW I get it! So I want to show you how to make Rhinestone Designs with the Silhouette Cutting Machine. And FYI – deal alert – at the end of the post.
First, here’s my kit and it’s contents – fabulous!
Now, just a heads up, I switch between projects for the tutorial – sorry about that!
–First, pick out a “rhinestone” design. It is a design made out of little circles. The kit comes with a CD with some designs (but my craft computer is the reject computer and has issues – it won’t play CDs most of the time) and you can find designs in the online store for $1 – I got mine in the online store.
–Position your design like you want. IMPORTANT: Do NOT Resize your design! The design is made up of a bunch of circles that are the right size to hold rhinestones. If you resize the design, the rhinestones won’t fit right.
–Cut your design on the special paper, green side up.
–Then you stick the green sheet onto a piece of really stiff cardstock. Now you have your template ready. You dump rhinestones on top of it and brush them around until they fill in the holes. I wasn’t that great at the brushing – for me it was easier to carefully put a sequin in each spot. The bigger holes (like the letter “E”) are for bigger rhinestones and the smaller holes (like the pink swirls) are for smaller ones.
–Almost done! You take a piece of the clear tape sheet stuff and put it on top of all your carefully laid out rhinestones – they will stick to it. You carefully lift up the clear tape and this is what you get:
–Then you just place it wherever you want to attach it. The rhinestones have heat-activated glue on the back, so you just place a cloth over the plastic and iron the design to the shirt for about a minute. Then peel the clear tape off and the rhinestones stick to the shirt.
I feel that when I made shirts at home I want them to be custom – you can buy rhinestone shirts in the store, but you can’t buy ones with the letter “E”!
She loved it! I love how it has pink and silver, and is personalized, but in a subtle way. And I love spicing up plain hand-me-downs!
