A few weeks ago we went to Univeral Studios in Orlando, mostly for all their Harry Potter worlds – and it lived up to all the hype! Of course the main prep I did for our trip was to coordinate matching DIY Harry Potter Tees – cause you know, coolness 😉
They were a HUGE hit, and we got comments from people all throughout the day on how they loved our shirts. The staff at the park along with everyone there were smitten, as were we. And I’ve got all the details on how I made our own shirts here for you…
We planned our vacation with two other families, and that was all the more fun! So of course, everyone got tees that coordinated. All the kiddos, lined up in the wand shop:
And here’s almost all of us, but the shirts are harder to see in this one:
We had the best time! I should probably do a whole post about Universal Studios from the perspective of first-timers – it was really great…
And we of course experienced everything we could!
And took bunches of pictures…
All the more reason to have amazing tees!
So, about those tees…
DIY Harry Potter Tees
—HTV: I used Heat Transfer Vinyl that I bought from Expressions Vinyl (affil. link), where I buy all my vinyl! Each family had their own color to differentiate family groups – one family had Charcoal (that’s my fam!), another had Black, and the third had Gold. HTV is vinyl that you can custom cut then iron on to tshirts. I ended up using my heat press instead of ironing on these, but either way works!
—Blank Tees: this was the biggest challenge! I was kind of sold on doing baseball tees, just something different than plain tees, but the trick was to be able to buy the same-ish one in all sizes, little kids to adults to women – and the men wanted short sleeve. I thought a bright-and-bold sleeve would be fun, but the only color we could find that came in every size option was black. I found them online and I can dig up the website if you’re interested. The women’s cut ones were super small, heads up!
—Process: I used my Silhouette Cutting Machine to cut the vinyl. If you’ve never done that before, I have a short video tutorial all about Heat Transfer Vinyl!
—Tee Quotes: we let each person pick their own tshirt design – it was a challenge to narrow it down to favorite quotes! There were a few quotes that got used more than once, which was totally okay. Here are the ones we used:
Felix Felicis {liquid luck}
Always (with the deathly hallows symbol for the “A”)
I Solemnly Swear That I am Up To No Good
Straight Outta Hogwarts
Mischief Managed
I was going to make a Voldemort joke, but everybody nose it
Dumbledor for President
Happiness Can be Found Even in the Darkest of Times…
Alas! Earwax
Anything is Possible if you have enough nerve
I am what I an’ I’m not ashamed
MimbleWimble
Hope that helps you out a little if you’re planning to tackle making your own shirts – it’s doable!! and everyone loved them – several people wanted to know where we bought them so they could get some for themselves, and it’s always fun to come back with, “oh, we made them” 😉
this guy’s Voldemort one was the hit of the day for sure….
It was a blast!! If you have Harry Potter fans at your house, you need to head to Universal Studios for sure. With DIY Harry Potter Tees 😉
While in Orlando we also hit up Legoland, and if you’re wondering about Legoland with Older Kiddos, I wrote a whole post about it (spoiler alert – we loved it!). Now I just need to get things in gear and write about Universal Studios as First-Timers.

I love the shirts! We will be going to Universal Studios in Orlando in March 2017. What font did you use? I am hoping that the Silhouette file could transfer to a Cricut, which is what I have. I am from Kansas too. Nice to meet you. I will be following your blog.
Mandy Beyeler says
The tees are all in different fonts or designs – is there a specific one you’re wondering about? I don’t think that Silhouette files transfer into Cricut files, sorry!

Wondering if you could send the website for the shirts. My kids are HP fanatics.

I bought the plain baseball tees and then added the HP quotes to them using vinyl I cut at home. We love them too!
