Appliqued Onesies are about the cutest thing ever. At a recent baby shower for my sister-in-law, instead of games I planned a craft (of course!) where we would applique onesies. It seemed foreign to a few guests, so I thought there might be some of you out there that need a tutorial.
I had the idea for glasses on mind ever since I saw the idea on Under the Sycamore a few years ago (you’ll have to go to the link since I can’t grab a picture) – I only just looked up that post right now, and it turns out my tutorial and her tutorial are super similar – I think it’s just the basic way to applique.
So here we go…
First, you’ll need some Wonder Under/Heat n Bond/Steam A Seam – – you buy it near the “notions” section, and it’s in a package. It’s a sheet of double-sided stabilizer that you will iron onto the back of your fabric (bumpy side does on the fabric). Here it is on the back of the dot fabric:
If you’ll notice, I also had a glasses shape cut out – I used my Cameo, but you can hand-cut a shape, no problem. I cut it out of contact paper so I could stick it down. You could always just draw a shape directly onto the fabric. So – use a template or drawing and cut the shape out of the fabric that has the stabilizer ironed to the back:
Once it’s cut out (I cut glasses and dots for a chain), peel off the backer paper from the stabilizer. The glue part of it should remain on your fabric.
Next, iron like crazy. You want to melt that glue so that it will stick and hold the fabric to the onesie:
You can stop at this point, you or you can do a quick stitch around your object for extra cuteness and stability. Some objects look great with contrasting thread, etc. I just went with white on this one:
Here are the ones we made at the party – – I think they all turned out really cute! My favorite might be the ice cream cone…
If you do this for a party, I suggest buying onesies in several sizes – we had newborn, 0-3, and 3-6 – so they’ll get more use.
I have a Cameo that can cut iron-on vinyl and an embroidery machine – both are super cute ways to customize shirts and onesies, but I still love the old-school applique way as well. If you’ve never tried it, you should!

what a great idea! Now the mama can think of all of her sweet friends every time she sees a onesie – love it!

Super sweet idea! That must’ve been a fun shower. A major step up from playing shower games. My favorites are the glasses & the chevron-style bird.

Perfect! I love the glasses on the chain, but all of the designs are fabulous! The concept of crafting at a baby shower is brilliant! Thanks for posting!

I’m doing this on Saturday! Except we are using freezer paper stencils and paint…and tying a quilt. So fun to give them something from everyone who came to support them!
